Amethyst is found in geodes and often displayed in their host rock. Heat treatment of Amethyst produces citrine as it eliminates the iron which is the coloring agent causing the violet to deep purple color. Amethyst is found in many countries throughout the world. It holds a 7 ranking on the Mohs' scale of hardness making it a fairly sturdy stone. Amethyst can be beautifully faceted, cut as a cabochon, or tumbled. All resulting in a beautiful piece. As a cabochon, Amethysts can sometimes have the star effect as in a sapphire.
